come solo. leave with mates.
you've landed. 20 minutes later you're on the beach in negombo, dropping your bags and washing off the flight. aim to land by 5pm — at 6pm we kick off properly: welcome drinks, orientation, the run-through of the trip ahead, and a structured icebreaker (no awkward small talk). then dinner together on the beach to round out night one.
this morning we leave the coast behind and journey inland to the cultural triangle. on the way we stop at the dambulla cave temple — a unesco-listed complex of five caves filled with buddhist murals set into a dramatic rock face. at sunset we climb pidurangala, the rock that looks straight across at sigiriya. the summit is broad and open, perfect to sit with the crew and watch lion rock glow gold as the light drops. arguably the best sunset viewpoint in the whole area.
optional but encouraged: an early start to climb sigiriya rock fortress, the 5th-century palace built on a 200m monolith. going up as the gates open means you beat the heat and most of the crowds. the sleepy ones get a slow morning at the guesthouse. everyone meets for brunch, then on the coach by midday. the train-keen crew gets dropped to ride the iconic segment through tea country — the coach picks them up at the other end. arrive in ella late afternoon.
a full day in the hills. as a group we visit the nine arch bridge, timed for a passing train and the iconic shot. the rest of the day is yours: hike little adam's peak (an easy sunrise option), wander the tea fields, or just slow down with a long lunch and a view. tonight is a relaxed one to save your energy for tomorrow.
your second full ella day, built your way. swim at ravana pool club, tour a hillside tea factory to see how ceylon tea is made, or do nothing at all. tonight is your included mountain dinner at chill cafe, one of ella's most-loved spots, followed by their party night for anyone who wants to send the mountains off in style before we drop to the coast.
drive to hiriketiya (around 3.5 to 4 hours). the mountains are gone and you are now in a horseshoe bay with one of the best beginner waves in the world. free time to hit the beach or take an optional sunset surf. tonight, the optional secret jungle party deep in the rainforest is your first real sri lanka party night.
the day hiriketiya was made for. morning surf or beach time, then the afternoon is yours. tonight is a headline event: your included dinner at smoke & bitters (#86 on the world's 50 best bars list), followed by the dott's bay house party that runs until sunrise.
after two big nights, today is for recovery. late breakfast, beach all day, optional yoga, swim, eat. the trip is half done and the crew is now fully formed.
slow morning at the beach, midday departure to yala (around 2 hours). 3pm safari in open-top jeeps: leopards, elephants, crocs, peacocks, sunset over the savannah. safari under canvas tonight, with your included dinner under the stars and drinks around the campfire.
slow breakfast at camp, then on the road by 11am for the drive west to mirissa (around 2.5 to 3 hours). no more packing after today. settle into satori, the only beachfront hostel in mirissa, with its own private beach. optional sunset surf to christen the coast.
the group heads west to ahangama (around 25 minutes), the south coast's cafe-and-surf darling. the beach here is kabalana, one of the best surf beaches in sri lanka, with a lesson for the first-timers and a free surf for the rest. then boutique cafes right on the blue water, coffee in hand, watching the surfers roll through.
a full free day to build your way. whale watching off mirissa harbour (in season), a galle day trip, a coastal cooking class, turtle conservation, yoga, or whatever you feel up to. tonight, lamana or trax in mirissa, where the beach bars turn up after dark.
another beach day on your terms, then the big one: the satori friday boat party, your last proper blowout before the farewell.
the peak of the trip. back to the coast where it all clicked, one last beach day, then dinner together as the sun drops. by now nobody's a stranger. everyone walks away with a name that only makes sense if you were there. the curry arsonist. the one who always knew the bus time. first in the water every morning. nobody leaves without one. then we close the night out together.
late checkout, then a short drive to galle (around 40 minutes), the unesco fort built by the portuguese in the 1500s. a couple of hours to wander the walls, the lighthouse and the boutiques, then a closing brunch as a group at a rooftop cafe over the ocean. the trip ends here. you don't.
